You have been so kind with your responses to my poems that travel back to the days when I was a boy and I thank you. This poem was written as a tribute to my Mom and Dad. Mom was hard working and it broke my heart when she died of Cancer at the age of 54. But I know she is with God. Dad is there with her. Dad only got as far as the sixth grade in school when my grandfather died and he quit school to work full-time to take care of Grandma. But even with a sixth grade education, he got a job as a sheet metal worker, building F-27 airplanes at Fairchild Aircraft. I still have a watch that was given to him after 25 years of service. This man could take the car apart find why it was not running right and put it back together. He and his car took us on many wonderful trips. In the fall, Skyline Drive would call to him and we would ride and look at the beautiful mountains of Virginia as they turned so many brilliant colors. Today, everybody needs a college education, they say. Dad didn’t.

So, You Want Memories?

My fellow writers it is a monster that you have created today.

You have put me in the mood to let my mind go ahead and sway.

It takes me once again to my long ago childhood days.

When we had no computers, we entertained ourselves in other ways.

My Mom could be harsh but she loved us and we knew it.

My Dad had many chores to do but always found time for us a bit.

When I was very young we did not even have a TV set.

Cell phones and satellites had not been invented yet.

But those were times when we found happiness in the simplest things.

It was fun to simply play on the floor and listen to Mommy sing.

And Dad was a special person, though he didn’t have much of an education.

Still he had knowledge and he was never, ever short on dedication.

In short, I would not trade places with my children for any price you may name.

We did not need Nintendo; we would make up our own game.

Dad would take us hunting for squirrel or maybe we would hunt rabbit.

This we looked forward as fall came and it was a Saturday Morning habit.

We did not eat like kings, but we didn’t starve to death either.

We would hunt and sled in the winter time until the cold made us take a breather.

Oh, those wonderful memories of when I was a youth.

But, I must admit that I would not go back and that my friend is the truth.

Life is a glorious journey that God has planned for us each and everyone.

So, though I will always have my memories I will life each day till it is done

I, too, recall those days, when playing marbles while laying on our bellies in the dirt was great fun; chasing lizards and netting butterflies. Hours spent with the family dog and hoeing rows to plant the food that would later grace our table. Saturday mornings, I mowed the lawn with a "real" push mower, no motor. I loved the sound of the rotating blades,(still do) and if I had to stop for any reason, I would have to get a running start and smash into the mover handle to get it moving again. Playing outside was what we did, it was not an option, mom would shoo us out. We wanted to be outside, because that was where our friends were. I remember playing stickball in the field, undershirts as bases and no mitts. Life was good and I wouldn't have wanted to grow up any other way. You have evoked many a memory for me with this splendid poem, Lew, I really enjoyed the read.
Take care,
Sherry

Lew, these are precious memories of days gone by. Surprisingly, they are so similar to mine. We didn't have those things you speak of either, neither did we starve. Yet we were all so very, very happy, and still are today. Those good old gone by days have stood me (and my six siblings) in good stead and made me who I am today...simple, loving, compassionate and oh, what love I have for Jesus, for Mom and Dad brought us up that way. Ah, yes, how much the youth today need a taste of those precious growing up day. Thanks again, Lew. This has sent me back in time! Loved it, too.

God Bless
Love, Lena

We still do not need a college degree today. All we need is a trade, a sense of right and wrong and great common sense Of course, some companies require this but they are overlooking some good workers. There use to be on the jobn training but now they want you all trained. That is a good bit to ask for each job is different just as each person is different. Marguerite
