My mind likes to travel now and then to yesteryear! I remember something about my childhood that my kids would never believe. Grocery stores, department stores and even restaurants were closed. I guess that is what made the Sunday dinner which we ate at noon so important to us. The difference is you didn’t call it lunch on Sunday. Today, everything keeps going. No day of rest for the weary. Sunday is simply another day. It’s kind of sad. That is what prompted me to write the next poem.
Never on Sunday
In six days the Lord created the heavens and the Earth.
He double checked them and ascertained their worth.
On the seventh day he took some time to rest.
On this day he knew now that he had done his best.
Jesus admonished us to remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy in Gods name.
He wanted us to take a day of rest, ourselves praising God in holy refrain.
We have become more materialistic in this day and age.
I have often wondered, “Does this not cause Gods rage?”
He asked that we keep the Sabbath and use it for worship.
But, I guess our worship includes Wal-Mart and salesmanship.
I wonder what our Master will say when we see him face to face.
Will he say we have profaned a Holy day and laid it to waste?
The answers are not always clear for us to understand.
We live in the twenty-first century far from the Holy land.
Things change as the years go by and so does our worship service.
All the same, sometimes it makes this old man nervous.
Let us all dig within our hearts and pray for his insight.
Our days are numbered and we will soon see the night
When Jesus comes in the clouds to the Angels sweet song.
Let us pray he finds we have not all gone wrong.
Interesting you should write about this. Our sermon at church last Sunday covered the Sabbath. I will send you a brief synopsis via a message. One question you might like to consider: When God rested on the seventh day, it was not because He needed to rest, it was because He had finished creating. Jesus did not observe the Sabbath either. In fact, He healed etc. He even said. "the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath..." We are to take our rest in Him. Anyway, I'll send you the synopsis later. :)

Personally, The LORD has encouraged us, "As much as possible, keep Sabbath holy [separated] unless there are specific needs."
Like Jesus taught, when He said, The Sabbath was made for man, and man not made for the Sabbath."
The Creator Himself rested...He knows we need that same rest! It is for our own well-being, to set a day [any day of the week] aside, for resting and thanking Him, pondering our ways, attitudes, and priorities, counting our endless blessings...etc.
His Word states that the hairs on our head are numbered, and the day is coming when no man [laborer for Christ] will work.........He will come as a thief in the night, and we are to live as if it will happen NOW!

Beautiful write...I too remember how my grandmother closed her store on Sunday, for Sunday was a day of rest...I still try to keep this day as a day of rest and church. I am blessed to live in a rural and small community where the smaller business owners still close stores and restaurants and WalMart doesn't open untill noon on Sunday. I am thankful for those that still recognize and honor the Sabath day as a Holy day of rest. The world indeed moves at a fast pace, I don't even desire to keep up...I think that is why so often that I write of the past, I find myself longing for the more simple times and ways of life as you have written about. Again, wonderful and inspiring write.

Lew, your work is a genuine and heartfelt write and I respect your opinions, however, as a Christian I'd like to say this openly. NOBODY knows the final day or hour.

I have noticed so many Christians stating that we're in the end times and publishing dire warnings directed at others and it disturbs me. I know how this affects non-Christians who only go on to say that we're all flakes. Surely it is better to live our every day as though it were our last and not live in some real or imagined state of flux about the end of time. God looks on the hearts of people and not on their righteous acts. The only salvation lies in practicing love and 'love' to me encompasses forgiveness, mercy, grace etc.
When two men hit the reset button and decide to go out looking for the good in the world, they not only find it but also a lot more.
