Poem Artwork

Sound the trumpets, beat the drums and strike up the band
This parade I have not stood to watch for it is the parade of my lifespan
It started with my very birth, indeed strike up the band
I am marching slower as I look ahead and see the end is soon at hand

I look back upon my parade of life when indeed I marched with vitality
Today I march more slowly and with much less vivacity

The band plays on and the years go by and they have surely taken their toll
And at some time in this cavalcade of life I find that I have grown old

I find the beginning of this procession is something I can’t recall
The memories I can recollect are as a child playing football, basketball and baseball

Then came the day I met my sweetheart and true love was at hand
My heart filled with romantic thoughts, indeed strike up the band

The parade filed on and we were blessed with children which made our lives expand
Then came grandchildren to adore, once more strike up the band

This parade of Lew has passed so fast but not without its revelations
The music played from sorrowful tunes to songs and celebrations
I marched on enduring the times of blues and gloried in times of exhilaration

At the end of this parade of life I can see the golden gates of Paradise
A place where there is no heartbreak, no sorrow, no sin and of course no vise
I thank God in Heaven for this parade that passed
 indeed, strike up the band
