In faculty meeting this week, tears welled up as our principal instructed us on proceedures for intruders in the building-The whole scenario was suddenly brought very close to home for me
The mass of our children include
Those who are bullied and teased
Who live with abuse, divorce, and neglect
And don't live wth families intact
Many live in poverty ridden homes
Where basic needs are not always met
Where noses are often rubbed in their messes
By those who have plenty or more
These children have always been part of us
In honesty, I was one myself
We were taught to show respect in spite
Or maybe even because
We made choices and lived with them
And determined to become who we would
Why now are these children pitied
When they in their anger, kill and destroy
From early on, they are not held responsible
The children rule, and parents don't discipline
They make excuses and place blame
Or pick up a prescription and a therapist too
(Paid for by the state, of course)
The kids grow up with a false entitlement
Believing that they are "owed"
So they , in their self importance
Go on murder spree's for spite and revenge
The final escape of responsibility
The final, "I told you so"
Is the ending of their own lives as well

Sadly, you express truth about "modern" times, Karen. My parents raised seven children in poverty and yet we all came out without "blaming" or putting responsibility on others. You make powerful points here. Thank you. Love and peace to you,
Karen, I am a retired teacher and agree with you fully. How can we expect our children to become upright citizens when our country's heritage is threatened, when our leaders are too weak to uphold our constitution, when the almighty dollar becomes more important than people, when neighbors isolate themselves inside the barriers of their home and yard from other neighbors, and parents leave their children to raise themselves?
Even when I retired from teaching, school systems were attempting every measure (except one) to come up with plans to promote educational growth for students. The one they failed to promote was discipline and training in responsibility. I grew up knowing that actions begat consequences. Today's children have not the least sensitivity or fear of consequences for their misdeeds.
It is no wonder that a large percentage of students reach high school and don't even know how to read. I don't blame the teachers who are up against a bureaucratic wall. I'm against a deteriorating educational system that allows children independence without responsibility, and that takes every disciplinary measure away from teachers.
I cringe with pain, and yes, with disgust, when I see what we are doing to our children. Our society isn't getting better. It's getting so out of control, we'll never be able to rebuild a strong nation.
It is a sad state of affairs we are in, and the awareness of this generation of undisciplined and or uneducated presence that seems to bring havoc and death to the doorsteps of many innocent lives, seems to have become a priority and yet even so the ability to reverse this will take much work....
Wow! You are right my friend...we too reviewed the policy for emergency situations at our school, and had a lock down drill. That in it's self is scary for children, and to think that we have to practice for such a possibility. Growing up I would have never thought about such a thing ever happening...but now I am not surprized. What a sad time we have lived to when a human life means nothing to some. Our local college...three miles from the elementary school where I teach had a bomb threat the day after the Va. tragedy. The entire school had to be evacuated, thankfully nothing was found, the next day a high school student whom was a foreign exchange student was taken by police for making threats, and a fourth grader in a different school made threats to our superintendent because she didn't like a statement that was made in the local paper! And I live in a very small community...can't imagine what living in a large city would be like right now! Prayer daily is the only answer to this horrible rampage, prayer for our nation, children, their families, and for the teachers and faculty within our school system! Touched me deeply with this one my friend. Have a great weekend!

We are all responsible for the actions of our children, and this is when we need to put prayer, put discipline back into our society. Too many kids are in control, and too many parents are out of control, with their children calling the shots. Shame. A powerful call for change; very well penned!

You know, I think things started to go downhill when they took God out of school and discipline out of the home; we are no longer parenting our children; we want to be their friend. We are no longer teaching our children; we are trying to maintain order in rooms of chaos. Sad state of affairs...excellently penned heartbreak.
Most families don't have psycologist, teachers or other professionals to nip its problems from the start. I'm not pointing the finger at anyone but aren't we all a little to blame. We give and give to our children without teaching them the value of earning. Life becomes so impressionable through the media. Television, video games, etc. leave their mark. Responsibility has to begin with all of us or there'll be many more Virginia Techs. God Bless You Always, Paul.
Karen being raised in a family of nine other kids in order to maintain some means of decorum our parents disciplined us as needed and as was approrpriat. We learned our morals in church and our education was from teachers who we may not have always liked but always showed repsect to. With the downfall of religion, (and the religions themselves must take part of the blame themselves for their demise...but that's another story) and the removal of any means to discipline children including even spanking children are growing up with the only rule that there is no rule except money.
Sorry for the rant but your poem stirred up buried thoughts about todays society in me.
