Are We There Yet?

“Are we there yet?”

“How about now?”

When will we arrive at our given destination?

It feels like we will never get there.

“When will I be five so I can start school,

And then thirteen, a teenager growing up?”

I can hardly wait for sixteen and car keys,

At eighteen, oh yeah, a grown-up I will be!

I must say I hope to never “arrive”,

I want to keep moving along, ever becoming,

And, too, I long to never grow up,

Keeping alive the joy and anticipation of youth.

the first verse reminds me of my father in law, he thought we should do an 800 mile trip in thirty minutes, great down to earth Karen,

As young children we are too willing to wish our lives away but as we age we realize there is no way to slow it down with each year swiftly going by. I find myself saying to those mom's who wish their kids would grow up fast, "Don't wish for that for tomorrow you will turn around and they will have families of their own" how true are your words. Thank you for sharing Karen.

I'm with you and Felix, no rush to get anywhere...learning life is much fuller lived in moments of now rather than when

LOL Daddy's answer: No, we'll get there when we GET there. Not a moment sooner. :) Enjoyed this one - well done, Karen -

Excellant wisdom dispensed in this write, how true it is that the older we get the more we are willing to slow down and not rush to our destination, preferring to enjoy the here and now.

Karen, holding onto youth and not wanting to let it slip by is part of our lives. It may pass us by but there's "still" beauty in life and "still" lots of living to accomplish. We need to smell the roses and walk barefoot in clover and enjoy the beauty of our surroundings. I truly enjoyed this because our youth is an important part of our life.

A beautiful write, one that describes how each of us felt when we arrived at those milestones in our life...and then once we've graduated got that job, married, had children, emptynest syndrome then grandchildren...now I'm at that stage in life where my husband and I are rediscovering that quality time together that we tend to put on the back burner while our children are growing up...anxious to see what the next milestone will be...maybe traveling? But through it all we should keep our hearts young, our eyes and minds open and enjoy every minute of life! A touching and thought provoking write my friend, enjoyed!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

This is a question children often ask when your traveling somewhere; however, your poem expresses a life journey. I believe we sometimes think we are there, but then we have to change directions, so we have to ask the question again. A thought provoking write.

There is a saying that we are always arriving and always departing perpetually, someplace, on the time-line we're given. This reminded me of my children as they were growing. Good summation!
