Baggage

i have just returned from a very emotionally charged trip visiting my sister who has come through an intense battle with leukemia. While there my neice was married and for the first time in a very long time, my parents and brother and sister were all together-this comes from a bit of that experience

We all carry with us our pain,

No one’s more special than another’s.

All packed up and lugged around,

Like so much baggage,

Packed as we venture out,

On the journeys of our lives.

We pick out tokens from the gift shops of experience,

They remind us of where and how we have passed.

The trinkets add up the precious memories,

Through love and angst, peace and strife,

Moments of blessed solitude as well as utter chaos,

Come together with time and bring shards of welcome wisdom.

Bag by bag, small and large,

The carried pain is replaced by life’s gift shop tokens.

Cherished memories replace the former pain.

And life’s connections help ease the burden,

As together we share a bit of one another,

And the sheer value to each other of simply being.

...your well written words say much about most of us...sometimes we do not know how to get a handle on baggage...with so much to carry...a handle can lose strength and break anyway...so maybe it is just better to travel light...if one can.
wonderful write Karen...

It is a shame that something bad helps make something good happen Karen. We all carry excess baggage, some of us know when it is getting to be a burden and get rid of it as soon as we see that. Your words can sure make one think. Thank you for sharing.

What a beautiful heartfelt poem...and I love the metaphor of "the tokens from the gift shops of experience."

Very good life metaphor in this one. It is true we all do carry our own miseries but also our happy memories and love or loving feelings. I guess the trick is to have an even balance of both.

Tough stuff, Kiddo. Pain and suffering can sometimes inspire us too. Good job. Hang in there.

You've come far, Karen...it's the Baggage of a lifetime which hops the train of freedom by letting it all go and traveling forward...hobos don't have the family, but you do...the curio gift shop token is an excellent metaphor which fits your thoughts well...continue on, Karen. A token arrow head bolero from the firebrand for your thoughts...

Love Always,
Sage

Yes, Baggage, we all have it, some very light, but most overburdened.
The best way I can say is to just let it all go...Send all that baggage (negative energy) out to the Universe, forgive and let go. I have done this with a few of my family members, because you what you can't change anyone, the only thing you can change is how you react to them. So my dear friend, baggage is stuff from the past, and letting go of the past releases you to live in the present moment. And that is where life is taking place..so live and forget about all that baggage..It's a waste of precious time and energy..
Much peace, love, and light,
Amber "V"

Separating the wheat of life from the chaff... that's what our memories choose to do and often it is at these times of intense emotional impact. No wonder your senses and nerve-ends are ringing, Karen. But sorely troubled waters can shift untold amounts of historic and unspoken debris. I pray that your sister continues to conquer this battle and that healing and bonding moments such as this precious wedding within your midst will be stepping stones to strengthen her along the way. My thoughts are with you. Such grace and courage displayed. Bless you, Kate xx

Weddings, death, and illnesses bring families together if only briefly the baggage is left behind. Hope your sister continues to improve.

Prayers to you and your sister. What a trying time you have had, but God will put it write. You can still write from your heart good messages and I am praying now for your family. She needs more strength and God will give it to her. And to you too.

Aw, Karen, this is very uplifting . . . I read your memoirs, so I know what a gathering such as this can mean, and possibably can BE mean . . . From the tone of the poem I assume everyone was there for your sister and that in itself gave the "other" pieces of baggage a quiet corner to reside until the visit was over . . . I hope you sister continues to improve . . . I hope you and your family will have grown during these last few days . . .
