My Boys

Front and center sits my oldest student,

A boy, attempting to be a man.

He’s sees himself as a real tough guy;

Like a football player, but he's quite a bully.

To the right my daily comic relief...

His mother would die if she knew,

His-tales of her bathtub bubbles-,

And stories of his step-dad’s stench.

Red hair and glasses don my next charge;

Bright and sweet and always on time.

His work’s always done, homework too,

But at the drop of a hat, teardrops appear.

Then in the back and almost never here,

Adorned in the newest fashions, not a hair out of place,

When he’s in attendance we always are told

Of the newest, the best, most expensive new purchase.

And in the back as well, across the room,

A handsome boy who smells so bad;

My biggest boy, and oh so bright,

With a nasty temper to beat all else.

And two more young men who come and go

To refresh their memories on how to behave,

Or take a break from other classes,

One of them destined for a scholarship,

The other - a softer heart - you’ll ever know.

These are my boys, We hang out every day.

You can see my great fortune in the way

I spend my days:  I never dread a single work-day,

For I consider my work a great privilege.

In 1947 as a runaway 14-year-old, I wandered into a small village on the Winnebago Indian Reservation in Nebraska and was welcomed with no questions and open-arms kindness, an event which saved my life and transformed my future.

From the perspective of being one of the "Boys," I extend heartfelt respect and congratulations to Karen Vanderlaan for her lifetime of work and devotion to those who need it most.

And in her revealing poem "My Boys," dear Karen shares with us all how great a challenge she faces every day.

Bless you, Karen, for you surely are one of God's angels on earth.

You just don't hear that often Karen - that people consider their work a privilege. It gives me hope that there are still jobs out there that give that kind of satisfaction. Keep up the great work.

To know you are able to make a difference in the life of a child and yes I consider teenagers still to be children, has to be one of the greatest gifts one can have. When young I dreamed of being a Junior Hight Teacher for it was during those years that I met educators that really made me change the way I looked at life. Sadly I never got to fulfill that dream but I envy you yours and I know you put your full heart into it.
