not a great poem by any means but it tells a great story

Birthday Treasure

A beautiful woman in the fight for her life,
Lays softly in the hospital bed.
Her husband sits beside her,
His gloved hand touching hers.
She sleeps her medicated sleep,
As in his chair he sleeps,
The sleep of worry and exhaustion.

But they listen and pay attention,
Refusing to become to self absorbed,
He brings cookies to the nurses on every shift,
And expensive gifts for the attending physicians.

A smiling little Nurse's assisstant,
Who was short and round and lovely,
Was so affected by the spirit of the woman,
That she cried with her when she suffered.

Well as she checked in one day,
They heard her say, "Today is my birthday."
So on that day, at the end of her shift,
A cake was presented with her name in pink.

She held the box in both her hands,
Her smile was wide but speechless,
She carried that box like a treasure,
And as the elevator closed, her joyful tears said it all.

It is indeed a lovely and meaningful story, Karen; and as Georg states, it is often the little things that say so much. Thank you. Love and blessings,

Even in sorrow there is joy. Remarkable piece of poetry bringing out the good in people who rise above their own sorrows to being joy to someone else.

This is truly a marvelous and heart warming story, brought back a painful memory though. When my mother was dying from cancer in a hospital in another province from where we (her children lived)we all decided to go to there and spend her birthday with her in the hospital. The last one to arrive should have been my youngest brother James. He never made it, he and his gf were in a motercycle crash on the way and he died. We all, including my Dad and I had to return to Nova Scotia for his funeral on the day of her birthday. The nurses promised us they would not leave her for a moment and even brought in a birthcake for her and presents to try and cheer her and take her mind off the death of her baby.
