Monsters
Under the bed and creatures in the closets,
Monsters lurk in the minds of children.
Parents and Adults attempt to quiet their fears,
With nightlights, sweet stories and ‘happily ever after’ tales.
But children have real monsters to fear,
Hiding and lurking about,
Bullies at school and the danger of strangers,
And homework that just can’t be done.
There is the damnation of God
Or the hellfire of the devil himself.
Ill suited parents who scream yell and hit,
Or choose one addiction or the other over them.
School bullies who never take a break,
Torment their victims day after weary school day.
The broken promises of careless adults,
Bring disappointment deeper than they can bear.
Some kids are shot or even beaten to death,
(They hear it on the news).
Rapist and molesters sneak in after bedtime,
Speaking threats to terrifying not to head.
Big people who leave bruises and break little bones,
And kids who get shot in the crossfire of gangsters,
Cancer and diseases that make no sense at all.
All this adds up to countless monsters to fear,
Those in the closets and under the bed,
Those just might be their best friends.

Only wish I thought that the people who most need to read this
could be made to. You have done a beautiful job with
a deeply depressing and utterly maddening subject: the maltreatment
of children in all its many -- and monstrous -- forms. You and I know
well the toll it can take. Our personal and professional backgrounds
have for good a n d ill put us inside, looking out (so to speak. . .sorry I can't think how to put it right}. Big plus is that we
gained compassion. Yours shines in every word you write!!
Love you!
