Both Your Job and Mine

Your child will be with me today,

Seven and a half hours, here at school.

I will arrange my day so he gets what he needs,

And watch to see that he stays crisis free.

Because of the tumultuous life he has with you,

He lives on the edge of crisis-always,

He is often unkempt and always unprepared,

He smells of your cigarettes and dope.

I will teach him science and writing and math,

Though he is so far behind it is scary,

For it seems though you blame and criticize the school,

Your child’s attendance has been deplorable.

Yet I’ll be the one who washes his gym clothes,

Since they rarely are done at home and he is failing.

And I will also get him food when he comes without eating,

And work and pay taxes so he can have free lunches,

And you can collect your welfare check,

But let me tell you, I’m getting worn out,

Doing both your job as well as mine.

Karen, This poem breaks my heart because his dad doesn't want to see his son succeed. I know this happens everyday, and special people like yourself are stuck with everything...I know it is difficult but without someone like you he would fall in the cracks of society. God bless you for all the hard work and time spent to help him. With your love and devotion he will succeed. All your hard work will pay off in the end and his father will regret not being a good role model. He won't respect his father and will look up to you for always caring! Take care, ~Chessly

Truly heartbreaking, Karen. I salute you and all other professionals who perform this unsung, unspoken role over and above the pressures of also dealing with the child as presented for education. Health, social care and education are not distinct when it comes to actually looking after a child... neither is motherhood, it seems. Your story is one I know to be replicated the world over. Your vocation and heart is worth lauding in the highest places. To serve your fellow man, woman and child is truly the highest level of profession there is. I am only too saddened that all too-often it is not perceived this way. Bless you, xx

Teachers are more precious than gold when they are good and caring. Keep on please, you may be the only positive memory of a sad childhood and the only encourager to greatness.

It must be so difficult to face day after day with no change! It seems our economy may cause a forced change in many habits, and this will be a good place to start!

And the beat goes on. We're into 3rd, 4th possibly even 5th generations of welfare. I believe education is the secret to end that cycle. Not for those who are already there, but their children. Seldom do you see intelligent, well educated people on the welfare rolls, but many of those who are there often aren't intelligent enough to stop the cycle from repeating its self for their children. It is frustrating to see so many children who are neglected on a daily basis...your work is a sample of the reality created by society and the repetition of this continuos hardship...fortunately there are teachers who truly do care...

Thanks for trying to save a poor child's dignity and soul. You are one of the unsung heroe's amongst us. Thank you for your dedication and love of your students.

For it seems though you blame and criticize the school

What a truly sad and selfish society we've now become - most now blame anyone and everyone but themselves for our truly sad state of affairs, today.
