With no serious threats on the horizon since the 1970s or so, we've had a largely mercenary (paid) military and not a voluntary (drafted) military, so it is easy for younger people who don't pay much attention to history to forget service of those, like you, who served so long ago.
The threat today is not a major Army or Navy approaching our shores or enemy planes flying over head. It is of small cell or even individual terrorism that makes every event seem like a small Pearl Harbor. In spite of what some politicians are saying, we do not have a weak military. Our military budget is huge and our military technology surpasses all others. We are capable of taking out any major threat anywhere in the world with dispatch. Mostly without troops on the ground or in harm's way.
But there are two problems: first we do not honor and pay our mercenary soldiers enough out of this huge budget that mostly goes for equipment, technology, and corporate profit from overcharging. Our soldiers have to be trained to be neurosurgeons, but they are paid like migrant workers. When they finished their service, they are learned skills are not honored by private enterprise.
Second, we do not take care of our veterans very well. Politicians are in favor of cutting back benefits to mentally and physically care for those damaged during their service in combat. That needs to change, so that no veteran should ever worry about making ends meet, or worse, end up in jail or in the street.
