TV’s pantheon of commercial hype
Occasionally is marked by a different type,
That tickles fancy, feeds the soul,
Uplifts and plays a quite cheery role.
A railroad ad punctures static rind
With poetry to nourish a hungry mind,
And leaves it dancing to pleasure terrific,
Agog at Sam Elliot and Union Pacific:
Pink mountain snow shines a desert expanse,
Voice of smoothed gravel intones a trance,
Reveals streamliner’s aerocurved perspectives,
Moving space/time frames extol electives.
Or note another TV spot, veritable gem,
That takes us to the past on mere whim.
This company’s a favorite, giant G.E.,
That builds a time bridge to fantasy:
A century back, the flight of Wright,
Tam O’shanters, suspenders tight,
Horse carriage, bonnets and hoops,
Onlookers there, kids flying loops.
Biplane rigged for small twin prop,
But big jet turbine strapped on top
Spooks horse, blasts roof off shed,
Tumbles errant bystander on his head.
Into the blue with the mother of roars,
History astounded, to the sky it soars,
Glides over cloud layers whitely fused,
And the moon looks on, greatly amused.
We bless the day when selling demands
More ads be done with poetic hands,
So TV values can rise quite smartly,
And glazed eyes clear, if only partly.
