I study the world, these eyes of mine

wondering what I behold

Could it be, there’s more to life

and my spiritual heart's gone cold?

I rush to the fire to warm it up

to make it beat again

‘Tis covered with frost a good ways down

stiffened with years of sin

Yet something--something--urges still

for me to know my inner will

this heavy burden I strive to kill!

Must function well within

 

Passers go and passers come

though not a moment’s heed

Left all alone to worry

no friends, no wife, no seed

So how might I, poor miserable me

escape this fearsome plague?

the winter grows more fearsome

more coals, my fire does beg

Yet something--something--calls me still

to shuck these shackles and hunt my will

the night and fiery darts I kill!

must function well within

 

Behold! a revelation does strike

my head so full of doubt

But amidst the frost and eternal quake

an inspiration to shout!

Could it be that all along

a refuge towers high,

and all I need but is to yell:

Oh God, down here I lie!

And something--something--happens then

the broken dark, the shattered sin

‘tis all of heaven, and all of men

does function well within
