Goodbye

Goodbye - an oftentimes used word,
sometimes simply a parting for awhile
and sometimes a finality.
Sometimes a cheery word,
sometimes a painful one.
It seems, somehow, that it should be
the latter now that I'm saying it to you,
but it comes as easily as it did
the first time we said hello.
You came to me for a reason
and gave me the gift of love,
and you gave hope,
and some beautiful scattered dreams.

The hope was my lifeboat during a stormy time,
the love, for awhile, was my purpose for being.
Then the dreams began to shatter
until they blended with the sky.
The hope had faded, but the love hung on and on.
Suddenly, with the coming of a bright morning
it simply was no more,
and I woke up to the person I use to be,
felt myself welcoming me home.
And, now the time has come,
my one time love,
to wish you well and...
finally say goodbye.

OMG, Marcia, this is so similar to my poem "Goodbye" ...of course the sadness wrapped around all 'goodbye's is the same I guess. Very nice piece and touched my heart deeply.
"The hope was my lifeboat during a stormy time" is so true and I have realized from my experience, that Hope is a dangerous animal too...
Best wishes, Ankin

Marcia,
This is a wonderful poem.It says so much!
Oftentimes,we do hold on too long after the purpose for a relationship has been fulfilled.
If all could say 'goodbye'as beautifully as the speaker does in this poem,it would not be so hard to let go.
Thanks
Barbara Henry

the penultimate moment of truth Marcia, "then the dreams began to shatter, until they blended with the sky" -- love's journey left a heart once dependent upon it, and the sky cleared in recognition of the lie it was attempting to live -- this is a beautiful piece relating how reality eventually shatters a foolish dream -- peace and love my friend -- JonMichael

Goodbye, a word that sound like a slamming of a door back you, as we go away forever.

excellent writing...but the sadness is in the saying of goodbye...a word that I will never for my part use...I learned that lesson already...excellent poetry.

Marcia,
A fine reflection and evaluation, and at the end of the road a realisation the time has come.
