Little City

by David Lester Young — Read all 1,103 poems by David Lester Young

I want to thank those, who support me, I may naught show thanks, but it is there. I deal with a lot of insecurity of my ability to write Poetry. I look to improve my works, to become a mediocre poet. I go introvert to dig myself out of depressions and it it is in writing that this poet heals inside a smile of words.

This is a story about when I was 10 in Holland and we where going to the "Little City." friends from America showed up and I have been taking that trip ever since then, in what if.

This is that driveway and house we lived in back then. César Francklaan 8 Heemstede (Right Side of duplex)

I wonder what this winds up spoken in Dutch? Can anyone translate and leave it in comment.

Little City

Dad ‘s car sat in driveway in 1957; thereabouts
Young 10 year old, anxious youth, awaits a trip
Kind of like a Disneyland American adventure
But onto The Hague “Little City” peradventure.

Venture forth the frolic anticipation pure excitement
David the Young one, upon this Heemstede driveway
As a car pulls up, with family friends from America
Dad comes out to say, there was a change in plans.

Bubble burst long ago, but still haunts this Young Senior
What if, WHAT IF: voyage to The Hague - had been taken
To the “Little City” that has held youth captive - 60 years
As dye bark, rings around thy tree, that stains on girth age.

Wilt that Young youth, ever reach - Netherland’s “Little City”
Alas, its across pond, beside reclaimed Zuyder Zee landscape
That was flooded during WWII, being reclaimed again in 1957
But youth’s see-shore ebbs; then wanes - the ‘Wake’ of Time.

The real name dew escapes ad-mists rhyme and reason ventured
Madurodam was opened in 1952, and it was 5 in 1957, as I was 10
Quarter size model, is now 68, as this Young Poet celebrates 73.
This “Little City ,“shall grow forevermore, as thee poet wanders about
That César Francklaan 8 Heemstede drive, tide of nevermore Zuyder Zee.

What an adventure and what a beautiful place to live in when you were 10! It looks to be on high ground and still beautiful, today. I recently took a picture from Google Earth of the 80 year old Victorian house that we lived in when I was 10 in 1952. It was a bit ramshackle but still contained a lot of the great touches of that great era with gas lights replaced by electricity and a beautiful etched window front door of an elk emerging from a mythical forest. Today, it looks run down with the front door gone and the front window where our bedroom was covered over with cheap siding. A shadow of its glorious beginning.

Your poem seems to relate that you were on a journey to the United States, never to return. Your father's change of plans. I will never forget, in 1967, when I went on a lonely singles trip with no date to ski at Heavenly Valley overlooking Lake Tahoe, when a Dutchman who was an excellent skier shared a room with me in a motel and then tended to me when I fell many times on intermediate slopes and prevented him from going to his beloved advanced slopes where I surely would have been killed trying to ski without poles and the ability to slalom to slow down.

This was so much fun to read and follow your young life, David! I remember being in Finland when the "Zuder Zee" was quite the item talked about! I like this new style of writing!!

Love ya!

Happy Birthday!!! And thank you for sharing a piece of your childhood's life with us. I'm glad that the house you lived in still looks great after so many years.

My childhood's house had been torn down and the street is now a commercial area. It is totally unrecognizable now compared to the big house we had on that terrace.

Stay safe and healthy.

Hi Dave !

Enjoyed the read. House is a beauty !

So, 63 years ago, you lived there.
If I ever hit the Lottery would love to travel to so many places.

Other than a trip to Niagara Falls & Toronto around 1986 or 1987
and 1 cruise to the Caribbean & Nassau in Jan. 2011, never any
major trips to foreign soil.

Stay Safe ! Stay Well ! Tom. ✌🏼
