Rest In Peace?

so cold the nights since he’s been gone
moving silently though the halls ‘til dawn
and mournful are the tears i shed
since he has been absent from our bed

the fire has died upon stone hearth
winter wind moans through the trees
my eyes strain to see his horse on the lawn
but only emptiness my vision sees

it seems so long since in his arms
i happily danced the night away
my cries are carried on the snow
as in thick darkness i wait for the day

the shifting clouds disclose the moon
bathed in beams of its silvered light
the mirror reveals a transparency
dressed in flowing gown of white

is this my fate is this my hell
alone forever to run its course
a ghost of a woman straining her ears
for neighing of a dead lover’s horse?

no rest in peace no sorrows surcease
doomed forever to grieve for thee
none shall ever ride into my dark world
at dawn to set me free
