A Companion Poem For Georg's "Twilight Of Times Past"

A Mother's Twilight Tears
By La Belle Rouge

I am but a silent specter now
A gentle wisp of a forgotten shadow
who languishes beneath the magnolias
by the ancient shore of the Santee
remembering, reliving former times.
No one remains now who recalls
my face or my bitter struggles.
No one left alive who thinks of me
or the Dearest Love of my life...
the one who bore scars of battle
upon noble chest and tender heart.
The one who yet rides the dark ghost
of his stallion across bloody battlefields.
Who mourns each hateful wound and
untimely passing of un-rewarded future.

No one knows or cares about us now,
yet...I keep a lonely vigil over the sons
of our sons and their sons and daughters
From the shadows I still weep
for the futility and carnage of war.
I grieve deep furrows of far away hills
and the unending dunes of shifting sand
soaked in the red blood of loving hearts.
I weep for the aching empty arms
and bleeding, broken hearts
of mothers, fathers, wives and lovers,
and all the innocent children bereft
of the tender care of their parents.
No one but God hears my lamentations.
No man hears my pleas for peace.

They die like flies swatted, crushed
by a cruel hand that uses them as
pawns in the power plays of corruption.
Mere insects squashed by juggernauts.
I hear their cries, I bear each loss
and I detest the cost of war.
For I paid it once and again and again.
So silently I pray to the Prince Of Peace
and beseech compassion of His Blessed Mother
who watched her own beloved son die.
If only my voice could be heard once more
I would plead, a tortured, weeping soul
with those who will not forsake their hawkish ways.
From the twilight of times past I'd beg
Don’t send my children to fight your wars

This is a most powerful portrayal of the feelings of those left behind following the death of those who sacrificed their life through fighting for our freedom. Powerful!!

WOW! I have no words, I can picture a desperate mom at a grave site saying this, over the death of her child that fought in any war.
So beautifully stated from a dying heart...

Oh my dear wife from past, you too? how many children they want us to offer before it is enough and we can go in peace to where we were supposed to start our eternity together...without another sorrow.
A marvellous response, my Southern Belle.
Yours, as ever

Darlin Belle... I gulp at this, following on as it does from my own thoughts about the vulnerability of our children abroad, albeit in the context of "having fun". However, maturity is thrust upon them when they vow to serve their country. As you so movingly perhaps infer in your last line, they so often become the playground toys thrown about by the children in office, intent on playing their war games. This is one-side of the coin, I know. No responsible leader takes the decision to go into war lightly. But just who and what's behind it all, I dread to think. We are all Rachels weeping in Ramah. A write borne bravely on the wings of much sorrow. Ave Maria indeed. Bless you, Kate xx

Amen. Powerful and poignant. Your words struck a cord in my heart for the unjust war our soldiers are fighting while corruption steals the oil revenues. So mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, lose loved ones for what? And we send the money for what? Excellent poem, La Belle. Liz
