I can’t be the one who held you
when your face was yet unlined
and your beard soft and dark
with no silver wires on your chin
when desire stirred your thoughts
and loins to rise like robust lions
who ruled the vast jungle of youth
I can’t be the one who cradled
your head in my lap and sang
songs to you in moonlit gardens
with lyrics not fully understood
voiced in rich vibrations of love
I am not the one for whom you
shed tears named “I miss you”
I can only be the one I am now
or perhaps an echoing memory
of one I once was in a former time
before we knew sadness of lines
and silver threads laced within
dark hair we ran fingers through
I can only be one who loves now
Very nice. I enjoyed this poem a great deal. Thank you for sharing it with us. ps: A big thanks too for visiting me and for leaving an uplifting and very kind review of my latest poem. Cheers, J'nia
as it has been so aptly varbalized, "all we have is here and now" -- love above all else, must be tenacious through the time we share it with another -- for lacking that dedication, love is nothing more than an unsophisticated tryst -- wise evaluation of human sentiments, sacrifice and dedication La Belle -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael
This is beautiful, LaBelle, this living in the moment, the now experience with the memories of course that we'll have forever but not allowing them to cloud the present.
This is among your finest.
