A Hyphen Defines A Life

Poem Artwork

The Hyphen

don't look away too fast
or pass over the minuscule mark
blinking lids or carelessness
sleepy eyes or weary mind
are not the champions of wisdom
the hyphen is tiny but paramount
it defines the entirety of a life
the hyphen is a thing of power
the space of a hyphen speaks
of life's brevity and lowliness

it's a small span from-to
printed in obituaries and
etched on marble gravestones
how many years lived between
the two, no one knows until
they are completed, regardless
if they're over a hundred years
they are still brief and fleeting
respect the hyphen, fill its space
with love and light, grace and peace

Blimey, such a unique insight. It's too easy to take our hyphen for granted and defer thinking about it until we near its end.
Having recently lost my mother and unexpectedly my companion this is a poignant poem using a powerful metaphor and observation.

May your hyphen be a long and healthy one until then eternal hyphen becomes a perpetual divine line.

A uniquely cogitated insight, Susan. I will read this to Michele. Thanks for sharing. Hope you're well. r

DEPENDING ON THE VIEW, INDEED THE HYPHEN CAN INDICATE SO MUCH...OR, SO LITTLE. IN ANY CASE, IT IS IN OUR HANDS, OUR CHOICES...OUR LIVES, AMEN. A FINE WORK, THROUGHLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU, LABELLE. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

So hard to believe that our lives can be defined by a hyphen and maybe, if we are lucky, a brief sentence to summarize our existence. Superb write.

Yes La Belle I get this ultimate message. Your heart is wide open to love, dear and precious how you speak these things to open the souls and heart of those that need this deep sobering message. Love is all that matters in the end-

Such a very meaningful message, my friend! I believe we're all here to help each other along on this "hyphen"!!

Love ya!

What a wonderful writing subject. Especially for "all-important" people to think about. It is humbling to know that, that little hyphen is only a very brief time to get everything done.

With your outpouring of books, you have used the time you have very, very well.

Yes!!! Please fill its space with love light grace and peace..I think of Kahlil Gibrans 'The Prophet' and yes we have to have the darks an lights but never in our existence have we needed as your poem states, more love light grace and peace..just writing those gentle words makes me weep.

Interesting take on a symbol that seldom gets attention. I, for one, see it differently now and will think of this poem when I'm tempted to use it. Small typo: "they're are". You might want to delete the "are."
Good to read your thoughts like you've provided here.
