The poem below in no way is a depiction of my life...it is fiction conjured by my deranged mind...dlj

What, When, Why, Where and How?
© 2007
Dan Johnson

Questions, that’s all I have,
Never stayed in one place long enough to listen to the answer…or answers.

No regrets, well maybe a few, but that’s for another time and place.

When you told me long ago that my life was trapped in the vortex of a mighty wind, I didn’t listen,
And went off doing the same old crap…again and again.

As I turned to look for you, big surprise, you were gone,
Instead of things getting better they got worse, much worse…

I felt as if I were in the cast of an Oliver Stone movie.
The title of the movie sets the theme.
The cast all dark and hazy
memories from my past,
But true to form, a movie like this isn’t the norm.
Half way through the shoot Oliver decides to change things up.
He thinks this will add to the plot and build the characters,
According to his vision.

But his vision is often blurry eyed…the ceiling is now the floor,
The floor is now, just outside the front door.
My life is upside down,
Ollie insists its all part of the natural flow of his (here we go again) vision,
But…I don’t see it that way, (call it artistic differences)
Fact is I don’t know what I’m looking at,
Is it real? Is it unreal? How am I ‘supposed to feel?

Why can’t I distinguish the balance of things?
Life,
Death,
Peace,
Happiness,
Joy
And sadness?

They are all such a blur…then in final triumph, Stone’s movie comes to an end.
And when the credits are proclaimed like white lines passing by on the interstate,
In final despair, I cannot find my name?

Still leaving me to ponder;
What, when, why, where and how?

I think we all ask these questions at one time or another in our life....seems more lately than ever, when we are young we often take the trials, troubles, and blows that the world throws us with a grain of salt and go on...as we grow older seems that we ponder them more...great write, you've captured it well!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

What, when, why, where and how?

The older I get, the more I seem to ponder the above, and I used to think that the older we got, the wiser we would get. Quite confusing!

You know Dan this is one write I really enjoyed and as I read it a few times, I thought, if just once I had listened to my mother at a young age I would never have to ask What, When, Why or How , I guess like so many others thought, how would the old folks know, Nice write Thank you for sharing.

A very interesting write of how many perceive life to be, anything but an even flow in the scheme of things. Great creative write...

Be safe,

A very topsy turvy rendering that is more true to life as the "norm" than you may think. We all seem to have these emotional roller coaster times that make us ponderthe words of your title! Which incidently is the first thing a writer is supposed to learn ;-) You say it well Dan, and give us a mirror to look into. Thnaks for sharing!

Love,
Eileen

I applaud this write, Dan. I like the way it just falls onto the page like the Mariah wind that inspired it, perhaps? It may be fiction for you but pretty much my Autobiography, give or take the internal details! And no... I have never seen my name come up in lights anywhere either, and yet... and yet there remains the nagging suspicion that someone, somewhere has used my head, my body as a stepping stone towards their own Neon blandishments. Ahhh, c'est la vie... You held my attention with the delightful flow of context and relaxed denouement of this one, making me leave all questions aside to just enjoy. Nice one! :)) Kate xx

Dan, you describe feelings without naming feelings. And I can relate to much of what you describe (e.g. 'the ceiling is now the floor,
The floor is now, just outside the front door'). Good, very good.
