The Soul of the Poet
© 2003
Dan Johnson

The soul of a poet is a tangled mess,
spanning moments of joy, happiness and enlightenment
to times of deep despair.

Poets
will rage at the right
And in the final analysis will be left
Empty, of head and heart until the first light of day.

Often
Times, poets search the heart of man
To find truths hidden in dark spaces,
And require digging, peeling and fumbling.

Every
poet is a circumnavigator in life
looking for safe harbor, but while doing so,
continues to search aimlessly for the truth.

To
every poet is given a mandate:
Accept the fate. that you are a poet,
It is from your soul that truths must be told..

I'm still not sure yet whether being a poet is a blessing or a curse.
But I sure look at things and people differently from most others.

Dear Dan,

Love this one. The soul of a poet is a tangled mess (along with the mind, etc, etc.) Say it again, Sam.
