Lay in my sweet valley
Anon’s Story
© 2007
Dan Johnson

Anon Broderick was new to America, over from Ireland, on his way to Seattle, The year was 1892, we were heading west when our
Train stopped in Whitefish, Montana in early spring,
With new snow and a chill in the air, Anon stepped off the train
To stretch his legs and survey this new and amazing land.

Out there, in her great expanse, she, the Glacier Lady, lay as far as the eye could see; peaks so high, valleys deep, high fir and rambling pine, Glacier Lady is a remarkable sight. She whispered exciting words, enticing words, to many a young seeker of fame and fortune, and, all the locals talked about the song of the Glacier Lady, and that she sang her sweet song at the beginning of each new season.

Anon stood on the platform drinking in his new discovery and like many before him, he heard the call; gripping him like a magnate, hypnotizing and compelling, he had no choice.

The train left Whitefish, heading west without Anon, this is the song he heard.

Come to me…come lay with me snuggled in my whispering grass,
Come lay with me as the river…flows so fast.
Come lay with me in all the four seasons… stay
Come love my peaks pointing so high, follow roots so deep,
And I will give you reasons… beyond compare to lay with me forever. .
Come lay in my sweet valley of love.

the call goes out this day Dan -- it is the never ending call of Montana -- her lure is strong, her lore, intriguing -- I love your poem -- it is masterful -- peace and love-- JMW

Montana, Dan, has but many beautiful places and mysteries, from the Glacier Lady to the Sasquatch, from the Blackfeet Nation on the North to the Crow Nation on the south.
Montana has been like Ulysses tempting singing sirens.
Righto man!

Gorgeous, Dan!!! And it is like that, too. Special places and special siren calls. Take all the casinos and tourist trappings out of South Lake Tahoe and you can hear the ancient Indian history and glory and aching love which is rooted in that sequestered place. It is a way-deeper kind of love.

I once stood in St. Louis at the entrance to Gateway Park, the place where everyone who headed West started from. I had an amazing almost visionary experience thinking about all the people putting their hopes and dreams into action. I came away feeling that if they made past the elements, animals, mountains and Indians, they deserved all the riches that the West had to offer.

Dan - enjoyed your Lay in my Sweet Valley and its tale of an immigrants infatuation with the new land he has entered. The song of Glacier Lady appropriately sounds like the enticing song of a beautiful woman, a song irresistible to Anon. - David

Dan,

Stunning character portrayal: you take us there, into his world - a brave, brand new world - beautifully penned. Well done!

I echo Stan's words and agree 100%.. that is exactly what good writing does.. takes you there! As I read this I realized that this is exactly how the first Acadians must have felt when the ships brought them here...Even though the destination was not their choice I believe the spirit of the bayou opened arms wide in sweet invitation... I loved this!!!

Oh my I was long winded there..LOL

As always hugs and smiles,
