The Sun


When it is time to go
I will dance over the hill
and color its scruffy hairs
with hues of gold
but for now
I will wonder freely
in my beautiful garb
through the morning fog,
blazing a trail
along the way.

When it is time to go
I will set off to remake
the face of the sky
with my golden brush,
painting its lips,
and cheek and eyelashes
with red and blue
and yellow and violet,
transforming it
into the face
of a beautiful bride,
but for now
I will wonder blissfully
through doorways
and hallways,
waiting to embrace
the sad and the weary
with my long warm arms.

When it is time to go
I will gently sink below
the western horizon
dressed in dazzling trinkets,
but for now
I will wonder cheerfully
through streets and highways,
through flowering and gray courts,
peering through glass doors and windows,
setting them on fire.

When it is time to go,
I will gladly take my leave
knowing I have done my best,
but for now
there is still work for me to do.
I must continue my journey
with the passion
that has kept me going,
looking for the lonely,
the fainted and defeated,
to warm and brighten up,
smiling through the day,
no matter what comes my way.
