My Darling, I lied to you when I said I didn't love you and sent you away, I have regretted that foolish act everyday.

My darling, you always knew me so well,
I held nothing back from you, all my secrets I did tell.
You always knew when you read my poetry,
If everything was all right with me.
You took the troubled woman-child and always saw the beauty in me,
You were my only lover, setting my passion free.
I got your letter today,
As always you knew what to say.
You told me that you loved me and would always be there,
That I would never be alone, because you cared.
You were always so gentle with me, soothing me like a child,
You called me daily, making me feel so special, although we were separated by miles.
You promised that you would always protect me,
I was your woman even though I was not free.
You told me of Puerto Rico, your beautiful homeland,
You begged me to leave with you, but I said no, because I was tied to another man.
I rued that day, while being trapped in a loveless life,
I need your touch, My Darling, to ease my fears and strife.
I lied when I said I didn't love you and sent you away,
That foolish act I have regretted everyday.
That one perfect magic night, I spent with you in your bed,
Dwells in my heart and reruns in my head.
You sensed that I was hurting and needed you,
And today your letter of love came to me from out of the blue.
You have offered me air fare to come for a holiday,
A birthday gift to remember, I can join you in May.
Samba Pa Ti, our song, when I play it you are near,
It played when we made love, I will always hold it dear.
Your letter made me restless and want to roam,
To at last seek my freedom, leaving kin and home.

Music: Samba Pa Ti
