Poem Artwork

The pumpkin sat upon the steps

Triangle eyes, triangle nose,

A wide grin with a tooth or two

Bathed with light from within

With tea light’s glow to welcome all

Who would enter in

The elderly woman sat watching

Through aged eyes

Her fine creation on the steps

The rocker’s squeak a soothing sound

To the pumpkin on the steps

Welcoming visitors in the dark

All night long he sat

The candle’s light burning out

The squeak no longer sounded

His eyes wide a fright

The aged eyes no longer see

The pumpkin slumps

His empty shell no longer proud

His mistress is no more

His light burned out

To shine no more

Eerie but in a poignant sad way that makes the reader feel the loss of both the owner and the pumpkin...who both die so alone there in the night. Very well done Ann this is a keeper for sure.
