A narrative poem that is a bizarre cross between romance, fantasy, and horror.

Poem Artwork

When they found out about us,

They locked me away,

In a windowless tower of this castle,

Guarded by sharp-shooting sentry and snarling dogs,

And surrounded on all sides by the sea.

Here, they think that they can keep

My Lover away from me.

Yet they are fools,

For my Dark Lover will come unto me.

When they took me away,

Neither clues nor maps did they leave.

That way, they thought, He could never discover

Where they had taken me.

Yet they are fools who know not of His power

To look into their minds and see.

By reading the thoughts of those very fools,

My Dark Lover will come unto me.

And even if He somehow finds out,

Where they have taken me, they think

The sea an impassible barrier between Him and me.

Yet they are fools, for He could force any captain or crew,

To plead for mercy upon bended knees,

And take Him wherever He pleased,

In exchange for their lives,

Or perhaps granting them immortality.

Therefore, my Dark Lover will come unto me.

And if no vessels are sailing

For Him to overtake,

He still cannot be kept away from me,

He will assume the form of a Bat and fly across the great sea.

When they see Him flying towards the castle,

They will bolt all its windows and doors, and think that,

Along with this windowless tower, will keep Him away from me.

Yet they will be fools, for next a Wolf He shall be.

Thus, my Dark Love will come unto me.

When they see Him become a Wolf,

They will release their hounds,

And think, "Yea, we have Him now!"

Yet they will be fools, for it will be the other way around.

He will sink His fangs into each and every hound's flesh,

Crunch down on their bones and scatter them all about,

Strewing the carcasses in pieces across the ground,

All while He drinks their lifeblood to draw strength.

Thus, my Dark Lover will come unto me.

When they see Him make carcasses

Of their mightiest pack of hounds,

They will command their sentries to open fire,

Believing that their shower of bullets will bring Him down.

Yet they will be fools to think that they can win such a fight,

For He will resume His original form, that of my Lover,

A Man who is more than a man:

A Creature of the Night.

Thus, my Dark Lover will come unto me.

The bullets will bounce off His body,

As if merely raindrops,

Neither wounding Him nor causing Him to flinch.

The sentries will drop their guns and run, yet they will be fools,

For no mortal can outrun Him.

He will sink His fangs into each and every sentry's flesh,

He will tear their soft necks to pieces and bring them death,

All while He drinks their lifeblood to draw strength.

Then my Dark Lover will come unto me.

With all their fresh lifeblood in Him,

He will be stronger than ever,

And I will merely have to wait for Him to use His strength

To break down the castle doors and destroy my guardians within.

Yet I am a fool

To think that I must wait for Him!

For I've just now noticed something that tells me how clever He has recently been,

Something meant to hurry our reunion along if it takes too long

For my Dark Lover to come unto me.

When He came through my window at midnight

The night before we were discovered,

He loved me more passionately than ever before.

He kissed me all over and told me I would be His forevermore.

He must have meant that He'd just given me what I now see:

Two tiny red holes upon my neck's nape,

So small they were missed by all, even mine own foolish eyes.

Two holes marking His deepest kiss of immortal life, a gift

From when my Dark Lover last came unto me.

Now all I have to do is wait,

To see who next bursts through my door.

If it is my Lover, together, fangs bared, we shall escape.

Yet any guards who enter will be fools who meet a bloody fate.

For I will sink my fangs into each and every one's flesh,

And drink their lifeblood to draw strength.

Then alone, fangs bared, I shall escape.

Among the living dead I will be.

So perhaps, my Dark Lover, it will be I who comes unto thee.

The strongest lines of your poem were in the last stanza. I particularly liked the line about, "Yet any guards who will enter will be fools who meet a bloody fate." It was a great read. I, too, enjoy a bit of horror and fantasy, although I often focus a bit more on science fiction. Well done! --Joe :-)

Nice little epic you got going here. Thank you for making me feel I am not the only one who could pull off a macabre epic. Vampirism in poetry is tough to play around with, you did a nice play off this. I am influenced greatly by King, but even more so by H.P. Lovecraft. You have traces of Bram Stoker in this poem.

Macey,
Very well done. I love the dark write. I'm an avid King fan and have all his books. Your biography shows you have set a very high standard for yourself. I wish you all the best in the world and will definitely be looking for your name among future greats.
