Tyrannical Speech

Many wealthy & influential people were called by their minister.

The church was in financial difficulties it was nothing sinister.

People were tithing so much less because of the economy’s decline.

Trying to juggle the books was driving the minister out of his mind.

So he called a come to Jesus meeting to get across how dire things are.

He called on the riche but everyone was welcome from near and far.

He pounded the pulpit throughout his tyrannical speech.

He was so determined that every person would be reached.

At the end of this explosive service, a man stood up in the back.

He could hardly be heard for the acoustics weren’t in tacked.

So he walked to the podium a little closer to the altar.

His words were soft and gentle but he never faltered.

But he was very determined and he was not about to fail.

How was this man standing for he looked so weak and frail.

“I have not much in material things but I’d gladly give it all.”

“If others here could give more, would stand up straight and tall.”

“You see, we all go to God for help every time we are in need.”

“But when its time to repay him, we’re bogged down with greed.”

“Our Father tells us in HIS writings that ten percent belongs to him.”

“How many times do we shortchange him, time and time again?”

“Don’t you realize it belongs to HIM , and he’s never ask for more?”

“It’s so his word can continue, that price is always fixed and pure.”

“That money doesn’t belong to you; it belongs to our Father above.”

“That is the sum he asks from you to build his church, to feel HIS love.”

As this man was at the altar speaking, people eyed him up and down.

He had no coat only sandals, light seemed to circle his head as a crown.

As he finished, he took a seat as the congregation went into a spin.

The people were befuddled and conversing generally about him.

When they went to confront this man, he was not in his seat.

It seemed he vanished into thin air, his mission now complete.

Guiltily they all opened up there wallets and gave until it hurt.

And they left the church sheepishly, very abrupt and very curt.

Christs' love reaches out to all of humanity -- he works in many ways we do not always understand -- your poem speaks of his love, compassion and the teaching of our Father's word -- much peace and love to you my dear friend -- JMW

Sad when they spend the money on themselves instead of giving it to those who REALLY need it: the poor!

As my sister you make me very proud, although don't blame Mom! :-)
Now I understand why, we were thinking and writing going up the same street, more modern we become less we thing its necessary to thank Him.
Even we have a drive-thru churches, a Sunday's PC (computer) Mass and last but not least TV Mass in the comfort of your home so you don't need to attend Mass on winter weather or very hot summer days.
For that I wrote about the empty churches.

Well, I don't give in to speech that asks for money because the church needs funds to build this, or to maintain that. I give to the poor to help the poor because they ARE the ones who need money most.

You don't just give to the church for the sake of you yourself may one day go to heaven, you give because you want to help someone who is really in need, regardless of the thought of yourself going to heaven or not. God will be the judge of that when the day comes.

The homeless man in the sandals is the sign for everyone in the church to know to whom they should give their money to. You give because of the thought you want to give to help someone, you don't give because only for the thought of going to heaven - this is too selfish.

Ah, Bonnie, you have caught the essence of the people-problem here.

It is not about money. It is not about God. It is about people living in doubt and spiritual disarray. Here we are at church because it is what we do on Sundays. The preacher is turning us off by working to build guilt in us. Who is that shabby guy in sandals - a homeless person? We give until it hurts to try and make the guilt go away. It does not go away and we leave angry. The homeless man, Jesus, has departed sadly.

Stats. For a number of years, the congregations of the Christian churches in America have been emptying out, thinning out. Why? You have the answer in this poem's title. I am not smiling.

Well myself I don't believe that toweering castles of granite with stained glass windows, central heating and air conditioning, and art work in some of them to rival what could be found in the Louvre is quite what Jesus had in mind when he told someone to build him a church...but I am agnostic so that is only my viewpoint.

Much to ponder here, Bonnie, well done. Usually it's the poor who tithe, gives until it hurts ... what infuriates me are these charletans dressed in fancy clothes, wearing big ole rings, sitting on gold thrones, who preach the prosperity message: "send money and God will give you a new house/car/money/etc., praise Jesus." Makes me sick. I didn't think God was a genie!!! There ought to be a law! *stepping off soapbox* Sorry about that, Bonnie. Your poem is excellent.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Something we should do every day and the minister wouldn't have to ask.
