The first thing that educators must provide for their students is a safe environment. If we can't provide this, learning will not take place.

Bullying Tip: A safe environment includes building a trusting relationship. Spend time communicating individually with students whom you may think are victims of bullying. Begin with simple, non-threatening questions showing interest in who they are. For example, select inquiring questions such as, "How do you enjoy spending your time outside of the classroom?" Or, "What is your favorite....?" Make a connection with the student in their response. "Hmmm, I enjoyed listening to Bon Jovi in his early years. I liked...have you heard this title?" By starting with other topics of interest, the student may come to see that you care about who he is and then gain confidence in sharing with you other issues that are more sensitive in nature.
