For all the brave souls who are battling the effects of domestic violence. My definition includes psychological torture in any and all forms. (Perhaps we should start a dialogue?) Peace and Love, Phyllis ....................................... .

I may not be able to slip through the bars tomorrow, but I can put together a plan to escape. I may not be able to ward off new cuts or old sorrows but I can patch wounds and refuse to give in to hate. I may not be able to greet every day with a smile. but I can be there for my friends. I can! I may not be able to say the right thing, but I can reach out and find someone who can. I may not be able to find all the support I need, but I can support myself more. I can! I may not be able to grow a new personality but I can think Good and pat myself on the head. I may not be able to stop loving the wrong person, but I can find someone to share love with instead. I may not be able to do all I want to for others, but I can listen without judging and hold out my hand. I may not be able to swim free just like that, but I can swim faster. I discovered this older poem and I think that you found the right words for someone who feels trapped in an abusive situation. It is simple, direct, and shows that little things can be done to increase self-awareness and gain control over one's life, step by step.

this is a wonderful and inspiring poem on a problem that is an everyday reality for so many who feel trapped and without hope. i'm all for writing and talking more about it. perhaps doing so can provide that extra support one "prisoner" needs! Dawn
