You ask for reasons.
We are all hostages bound by Fate and Time,
yet Earth puts on her apron and rainbows bouquets
to make a splash to surprise a workworn sun
into hide-and-seek that lasts until dinner.
Or a shower as bracing as a hard teacher
with a heart as big as Africa,
or warm and crystal as home-cooked syrup
simmered in blue enamel.
Snow-kittens that know to paw drifts on drifts
until snow people grow
for company.
Her indigo twilights are the best blues ever sung.
Dawns, rose and honey fragrant.
Live, then, as a prayer of thanks
for the gifts of her humor and art, but more,
for those who need what you alone can give.
For the moment when you forget the crowding thrash of pain
as a child snuggles near for a story
only you can tell.
For that single summer night that fit like a glove
velvet and green as a leprechaun’s, and the sheen
of silvering web or grape lollipop cloud.
Because waves tickle shells strong and intricate,
no two alike.
Live, if you will, for the moon.
Cold as she is, she pastes smiles on her scarred and pitted mug.
You can face anything.
Live!

This is a revised version of a poem that appeared in an ILP anthology about 5 years ago. I hope this version is fresher and less "sentimental."
