This is a much-revised version of a poem that was intended as a contest entry. Dumb me misread the deadline. Glad in a way. Whatever you think of this, it is several bumps up from the original. Take my word!

Poem Artwork

First-class painter, Sung Kim.  More
to the point, he knows that class
is not imported wood, etched glass,
and  “desirable” address.  Prig
looks down on a “ lay-about
fancies himself an artist!”  (Want
to see the stiff shiver, show him
your nails.)   Crave class, drop
into a struggling  used  bookstore
where the dust’s got dust. Sung
Kim often finds himself at the one
on Mud Lane.  Always the last
to leave.  Owner nudges, “Time
to lock up, sorry.  Take the book
home, think you can keep from
getting paint all over.”  Shuffle in
two nights later, book under one
ragged, parti-colored sleeve,  pad
under the other. “Clean as a whistle,
take a look.  Brought a sketchbook,
hope you don’t mind.   See the
palette in my sleep.  Antique gold,
lof of rich browns.  No offense, but
I’ll be mixing a fair amount of dust
gray.   Can’t wait to get started.
Probably enough light.. Amber
cast by the lamps perfect.  Just do
a rough tonight.  Bench across’s
empty, great.  Hope I do justice.
Imagine a world without books!”

I was absorbed by your imagery here, Phyllis. It felt as though that book was tucked under my arm, being returned. Excellent.

Awesome. I can smell the dust on the books muted by the smell of the books' pages. Love it. Liz

Pea,

I cannot, will not, imagine a world without books. Words. They are my friends when no one cares; they take me away to places I've only dreamed of visiting. Such a beautiful, poignant read - well done.

((((HUGS)))) and love, Karla.

As I read this, Pea, I see in memory eye an old bookshop I used to visit in Dublin...the only really dusty one... did it have character and dash...what!! and books you couldn'r find anywhere else and kindly old Jim never made a penny and people borrowed and never returned and he didn't care...thank you for bringing it all back.

I'm very selective in what I read but unfortunately do not spend enough time in what I read but it must contain a cross section of events in, stock your book shelves with good books and add some of your own.
