Old Oak Table

It may seem silly

in the face of so much misery

suffered by so many people;

yes, though it may seem silly,

making no comparisons

however,

for me,

what had been part of my life

all these many years

what had been part of my life

changing this day.

Not a particularly sentimental kind’a guy,

over old pictures sometimes I’ll sigh

over my dogs I’ll ofttimes cry.

But furniture?

Come on!

However…

Sentimental attachment here:

Old oak table

from the earliest year,

old oak table my family sat about,

family talked, laughed and cried about,

Sentimental attachment here:

Old oak table my family was fed upon,

family grew from infancy to adult upon.

Old oak table

leaving home this day,

bound for Washington State,

with my youngest son to stay.

Old oak table

my son’s family to sit about

to talk, laugh and cry about.

Old Oak table

my son’s family to feed upon

my son’s family to grow upon.

Not a particularly sentimental kind’a guy,

over old pictures sometimes I’ll sigh,

over my dogs I’ll ofttimes cry

but old oak table;

fifty-three years lived about,

thousands of breakfast’, lunch and dinners about.

Moving men taking what directed:

two recliners, four piece bedroom set and…

old oak table with six matching,

old oak chairs.

Loving each other these many years,

living alone no longer wanted,

so the homes of two may meld into one,

though not a particularly sentimental kind’a guy,

with a deep sigh,

old oak table sent on to son

New life dawning today

SO beautiful, Mark. And yep, furniture sometimes has a way of bringing back those memories of so long ago. I can relate, for sure.

Old furniture is like an old friend and what better way to share an old friend than with your son. Patrick

Your new life dawning I hope will be the happiest yet! As for the old oak table....I get it completely! There are so many memories wrapped around some things it's like losing part of us....cling to your memories my friend!

Mark, All your precious memories will be with you forever...The family table is very special because it brings everyone together! Now your son can create new memories with his family...I have my father's little table and it means so much to me!! Love your poem! Take care, ~Chessly

Yes it is funny how inanimate objects can retain and take on a life of memories, almost as if they absorb the energy around them and keep it inside the grain like a soul.

I do understand this tremendous poem, Mark! I am the proud and loving mother of a handful of hand-me-down family heirloom pieces of Stickley furniture, so can feel your sadness!
And yet...now you get the fun of shopping?
Blessings,
Christine
