Alone--
where love is hard to see
and harder still to hold--
I lift up my voice
to sing from the heart of darkness.
And I wonder if the world
will ever stop
for a song scarcely heard.
They tried to end my song.
They said that I shouldn't sing.
The melody was too different
and none could bear the theme,
They tried to end my song.
They said that I shouldn't sing.
That the world had no use at all
for words that echo and ring.
But what can you do
when the music burns
your heart?
What can you do
when the melodies
all start?
And they fill your mind,
and they beg you to sing them out?
You sing anyway--
and you hope and pray--
that someone will understand,
Someone--
Somewhere--
Standin' alone
is hard on the soul,
but it's the only game in town.
Standin' alone,
where the wind blows cold
can kinda get you down.
But maybe someone
will come along
and join me in my song
Someone--
Somewhere--
