Give Me Intermission Or...

A world without creative daring risks succumbing to reality’s plague: a desolation of spirit.

Give Me Intermission Or...

Give me death

So many sizes
So many types
Horns ala Miles
Baton ala Dudamel
Curtain ala O'Neill
Blackout ala Alvin Ailey

Walk-throughs
The Met
MOMA
Guggenheim
Whitney

Then the ache
Actors Studio
Steppenwolf
Goodman
Oregon Shakespeare
So many regional agonies

And the silver screen
Ever infrequent unique cinema clinging
Amidst movie movies

Forget not the most vulnerable
Literature
Let us respect even permanent breaks
Wallace
Hemingway
Woolf

And lest we forget Nature
The mother of life's subtle intervals
Ever cycling its wisdom
Seeking our theatre's darkness

Intermissions

Life knows of pause
But often waits for us
To squander its use

While

For those drinking of contaminated water
Art remains relegated as
Nectar of Gods forsaken
Yet for those of pure thirst
Avoiding such sustenance
Renders imagination's spirit dying

Strange to call the above intermissions
Still
Without the pause
We remain vulnerable
Overwhelmed
By necessities unnecessary

Might it be
Without some imaginative breaks
Reality remains forever
Just
Reality?

I am unfamiliar with a number of items in the first two stanzas, but beginning with stanza 4, I recognize: independent films of greater elevation than commercial, singular masterpiece writers like Margaret Mitchell, storms reducing us to powerless creatures, life's pause of minor illness affording opportunity to just 'be,' and we choose instead to 'struggle,' and poverty robbing opportunity of knowing the bliss of creativity. "Overwhelmed/By necessities unnecessary" ~~ succinct diagnosis for contemporary, advanced society's 'disconnect'. My response to the closing question is: food for the soul is more essential than food for the body. (But then I have not known bodily starvation.)
