Happiness Is...

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Okay, I was ready for this, and didn’t know it. Stumbled onto “Live in Cuba” a recent release of Wynton Marsalis, the concert grand of brass, blowing the sounds that always make the vibrations of good time feelings smother, even to smother any preconceived prejudice with Cuba. C’mon. This is ART. (Painting by Montgomery)

Happiness Is…
by Odin Roark

Wynton Marsalis in Cuba,
pushing the rhythmic heat,
joshing the sidemen to blast.
Oh, c’mon go…
I’m not watching.

How electric this back-burner rhythm,
maligned by politics and cultural ignorance,
until…

Oh, how sweet the brass echoes,
meandering through the streets
2nd track of strutting the many personalities,
sax, trombone, drums,
then in the distance,
the melancholy with a twist,
Marsalis…

Try as we may,
your foot must tap,
beat,
stomp,
feather the floor,
sending vibes to the smiles on our faces,

Yeah, Wynton,
you only need to nod occasionally,
and like the Pied Piper,
your minions of players,
followers,
indoctrinates,
even the…
dare I say,
Ignoramuses?

But, hey,
who’s keepin’ score,
blow, my man.

Blow.

Blow.

So peaceful the resonance…

Wynton, one of the few
giving us the peace of sound.

This is a sound that is right up my street. The raw renderings of such emotive playing far outweighs the commercial, digitally enhanced 'lemming calls' of popular composition.
Music has to be, not only written, but also played from the soul or it is not music at all.

...said she, while plucking an old guitar to the tune of a long-lost dream :-)

Is a warm puppy? Wynton Marsalis is certainly one of the most talented out there. I believe that he played the fanfare that introduces CBS's Sunday Morning. I also know of a man here in Houston, Professor Howard Harris, born in New Orleans, who also plays a mean horn, but is less well known. among many other things that he's done, Harris has formed the Latin Jazz Ensemble at Texas Southern University.

As for Cuba with its Latin/African Cuban beat. That sound would not be repressed by long years of communist dictatorship under Fidel. I'm so glad that you're opening up the possibility of Cuba becoming part of the American experience again after so long.
