Hard Wiring...Unless?

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Oh, how we love to point the finger. Is it not the time to demand of our minds that we accept the blame? Not them. Like it or not, we are truly all one. Clearly, we can’t separate ourselves from the “us,” the species that deludes themselves into thinking there’s some kind of special accord dispensed from the supernatural whatever, making us/them special. We failed that test long ago.

Hard Wiring…Unless?
by Odin Roark

How innocent it starts.

Perhaps but the pulling of grasshopper wings,
the squashing of potato bugs,
the magnifying glass sizzle of an ant.

Onward and upward we trod.

How fertile this playground
of elementary school,
where the smear of a peanut butter sandwich
on tricky bars renders the 4-eyes the fall
accompanied by lascivious laughter,
the unconscious sexual thrill of awakening to some.

Next the willed punishment
of the zealous career bluster laid upon those
suggesting a 20 year old is not omniscient
in all things so clearly obvious to the inexperienced,
this infancy stage of testosterone and or hormone rage or ambition.

Yes…

Such maturating violence is not male gender prone,
For all straight, gay and transgender have the inheritance.

So it goes…

Relationships flourish.

He said, she said,
he thinks, she thinks,
he does, she does.
the stealth-like conundrum of unconscious terrorism
knowing no boiling point
in life’s cauldron of discontent.

And all from what?

Only the ghosts of misanthropy‘s past know.

Some lurk beneath the robes of today’s caliphate,
some behind the chalice of duplicity,
most cowering in the ignorance of mind,
impoverished of education,
living tenuous existence,
awaiting another chance to
discover the next habitual violence,
the axiom rising above taxes, procreation,
and religion,

From cradle to delusional-living.

Hard wiring…unless?

Maslow laid out the hierarchy of human needs--first the biological, then safety, then social, then respect, and finally self actualization. I would guess that half of humanity never progresses past the conformance requirements of religion and politics, the underlying elements of "us v. them." Few dare to learn how to survive on their own independent of those social needs. A higher calling and more tolerance comes only to those who seek it.

This is a deep poem, thought provoking.

Powerful and thought provoking. The spark the essence of life unites all. Individual choices affect all. Well penned.

Indeed a perceptive poetic assertion. So much truth in it. Despite the fact that we are all individuals defined by personal choices and experiences, we are all still connected. And often in mysterious ways experientially too. Enjoyed your clear intelligent insights. Peace to you...

You struck a mighty cord with this one. Our reptile brain still exists. When we strip away the intelligence of the forebrain all we have left is a predator of a lower order than those at the top of the food chain. It is only that additional layer of gray matter that allows us/them to either respect other life and share it, or return to our base instinct and use and abuse at will.

In that last stanza you have outlined the failing of the human condition that survival of the fittest in a very dangerous and deadly wilderness created. When then we were only a small tribe or family trying to survive long enough to create the next generation, today we need to survive our thousands of years of conflict and useless slaughtering to become the global village we need to be to survive our own success.

Very well said, Odin. We are not born evil, not even violent by nature. We have to be taught to persecute, to fight, to kill. We are bombarded by the messages every hour of every day. It is 'us' or 'them' and the 'them' is always fluid, ever shifting, depending upon who or what is to be demonized next. Not hard wiring ... it takes brutal conditioning.

Sorry Odin, no matter how it starts, the fact remains "they" are evil in whatever Bible/Koran/??? you would care to delve into. I subscribe to no mercy, and not open our borders to them. Insanity is rampant.
