Poem Artwork
Fear’s Burrowing Escape
by Odin Roark

To notice nature
is to know the tulip’s heart asks for little.
its petals upon sundown
folding shield upon shield over innocence.

The sun,
also of patience,
remains willing to allow,
understands clouds of frustration,
nature’s roiling emotion,
occasionally needs to vent.

Humans,
on the other hand,
believe less in trusting acceptance,
being too occupied with the now reward,
ignorant of perfection’s struggle,
its infinite plan.

Children,
their first steps wobbly,
beginning life’s forward movement,
need pay little attention
to personal shields and clouds.

Yet…

Grown-ups,
with little effort,
remain children,
growing only physically,
their minds and hearts easily stifled,
persuaded to become duplicitous cripples,
unaware their miss-guided adulthood
is nurturing the habit of deceit and illusion.

Tall, thin
portly, obese,
such dis-ease
has no preference.

Thus…

Many wobble still further,
finally sinking down,
willing to burrow even deeper,
trying to escape fear,
nature’s nemesis for the chance
to strive for a healthy
heart and mind.

Fear scares me!! Odin. Now, you KNOW I had to do that! Hey, you have said what I keep hidden and this was a great eye opener. Thank you for this offering.

Love ya!

The further that we remove ourselves from the source of our life, our evolution, the less control we have over what's happening around us. It is change we fear, thinking that most of it is not good, even when it shows that it is. Picking and choosing what to promote and what to fear is the hard part. Knowledge and understanding overcomes fear.

Feeling alive. Helps being in the mountains or near the ocean. It's the negative ions. Does wonders for my wife and I. For some reason makes it easier to confront the fears that nag us. Healthy heart and mind? Seems to be a growing lack of both in this fast devolving world. A constant battle to keep both balanced you know. Enjoyed. r

Indeed, fear does takes its toll. We learn through experience its enveloping embrace and only wish to escape "nature's nemesis for the change // to strive for a healthy // heart and mind." John
