Glaciated Remnants

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

How paradoxical this hope and fear syndrome. Whether in the wintery mountains of Afghanistan, the conclaves of Tibet, or the frigid imprisonments of North Korea, a conqueror’s aspirations are destined to repeat the chronicled past and become still more…

Glaciated Remnants

Our sentimental past.

Our repetitious future.

Our inseparable layering
bound together
by hope and fear,
fragility held hostage by captors
preparing their next demand.

Some might shudder,
such ransom seeming paltry
to power’s hubristic blindness,
icy containment luring the determined
straining to reach a wintery summit.

Upon such storm-scarred peaks,
the shelter hut grins,
as within its four walls
stocked with wood,
but without kindling,
packaged nourishment,
but past expiration dates,
more crystallized mistakes
will seek its seduction.

A wedged open door
hosts the icy gusts,
dancing their last-note refrain,
hope’s frozen calliope dream,
once a carousel’s innocence,
now a whirlwind of fright.

Many succumb…

Hypothermic dreams taking over,
delivering happy endings,
where delusions forever satisfy
evil’s model of successful failure,
where rules of pretense and mirage
denounce truth as bogus.

Many unknowingly seek out the frozen journey,
today’s repeat of yesterday,
creating ice-covered ashen nests of flaming contradictions,
affronting reality like some whirling dervish
of gluttonous nature.

A few…

Denounce their anomalous Leviathan,
purging aberrant cotton candy
frozen on their tongues of childish deceit.

But…

Climb,
lunge,
grab,
and crawl go they,
we,
us,
lugging moral impotence,
unable to avoid infantile persistence.

Many…

Embrace evil’s innocent drippings
enveloping misguided yearnings
into yet another layer of glaciated remnants.

Oh, those, " captors
preparing their next demand."!!! They are enough to make you want to at least "leave" in a cool dream. 'Enjoyed!!

Love ya!

I read this as life's struggles within the metaphor of mountain climbing in which we believe we are pursuing freedom, only to be smacked down again and again by conquerors who are always in control. In the end the landscape is always littered with the lost hopes of humanity as we struggle and climb to oblivion. I could be wrong.

This one is a bit hard for me to swallow. For some reason, I thought about those who will pay any price to conquer Everest and once they are in the killing zone, some do not make it. And then I thought of the idea of layers of cold, hard authoritarianism that seems to overtake some parts of the world in layers over centuries that acts like a glacier… So slow to thaw. But I may be wrong.
