Hopefulness

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Unfortunately, this is the time of the year when decorative lights and tinkling bells causes many to forget those still struggling to find some light.

Hopefulness

The Santa of youth,
When cookie and milk waiting
Is all that’s needed.

Hope remains uninvited,
Even as school requires learning,
Entrance exams depress,
Dating becomes beggars’ game,
Job recruitment disappoints.

Hope comes alive,
As adulthood delivers
Salaries anemic,
Intimacy invisible,
Hungry offspring in tears,
Fido given to a shelter.

Hope becomes the crimson lining
Regret wears inside out,
As fate’s coat so heavy,
Dives one more time
Into dumpster-reward.

It's very beautiful how you approach the subject, and give it shape. I have learned!

There's little hope that lies in hopelessness, a mode of extreme destitution that many of us never have to fully experience. There are people in the world with very hard destinies; I see them all around me and when they smile I often wonder where they get the courage, the hopefulness of your poem's title amid the "dumpster-reward.
