Love's Empty Step

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

With so much distress and uncertainty perpetrating New York amidst the virus, one can’t help but remember the great depression and it prelude. How thankfulwe the fortunate who truly know the solace of love’s door being opened to receive. But there are many who know not the reward. (Image by sharedream)

Love’s Empty Step

Darkness had become his solace.

He sat.
He waited.
He knew a woman would never knock at his door.

Roses languished atop the coffee table
radiating ghost like pleas to be caressed,
to be fondled, to feel a deep breath
that would embrace their fragrance.

Time passed,
and passed again.

His final bouquet lay given,
but received by no one.
A candle never lit,
snap-shot never taken,
hoped-for-but-never-happening night
remained his delusional torment.

Expectations laid to rest,
time suddenly ceased,
silence became eternal.

The open 8th floor window
welcomed harbor fog to shroud his room,
while rising from the street,
urgent sirens came to a halt,
shocked pedestrian stood their distance,
faces lingered skyward,
astonished voices muttered,
“He just stepped out…”

A truly tragic tale. Depression and despair are possibly the most terrible things of all. So well described here in this narrative poem, more for what is left unsaid than what is said.

Suicide is the worst, especially when they make a public spectacle of it. As always, in these types of writes, you have a way of creating cinema-like imagery that makes a vivid impression on the reader. Well done... r

Your words have told a story of great woe. The sadness! An unbearable pain!

Love ya!
