But a Window

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

There are times when snapshots of one’s past rear up, having not been thought of in years, and suddenly there’s milestones of understanding. Such was the moment early this morning when I found myself contemplating the theme of my novel, “Three Way Mirror”. Although I penned it many years ago, the essence of its refective clarity roused my curiosity to attempt a poetic look at the window. Why this morning? I don’t know. Perhaps like the poem, it was a moment destined to jettison me into more questions. (Image by Odin AI)

Poem Artwork

But a Window

Back in the 60’s

I am but a window.

Where Jersey's skies kiss Manhattan's skyline

neither peace nor rage do I paint.

Held by clouds of gauze laced boundary lines

I am offered fleeting sanctuary to the rising ethos.

Horns,

voices,

 clanging,

jackhammers,

breaking the incensed ether of mass confusion,

all of equal worthiness seeking, through me,

a release from unbridled fear,

 copious love,

rampant loneliness,

and the 20 year old’s hopeful ego.

However…

Like all windows,

one either glances through me,

contemplates the layered images,

renounces the obvious,

allows transparency to guide,

Or…

Acquiescence draws a curtain of doubt,

whether ignorance,

 hostility,

vengeful composure,

 or guilt by default,

I am but a window in that long-ago year

where the attic of discovery atop a theater

brought forth a youth's malign-encrusted portal.

Like a fragile interface,

I separate a windowsill pigeon’s freedom from fearful man

As old visions shatter,

giving birth to epiphany.

Rest assured…

My lens of discovery does not provide answers from the outside

But instead reflect,

asking you to look within to find the echo of light afforded by

shadow's lateral arabesque,

and embrace the inner treasures often left undiscovered.

Giving yourself permission

to embrace hidden gifts

while smiling at the drifting amorphous gray outside

offers few answers, save...

Joy in our continued friendship,

I being but a window,

 providing transparency and reflection

and you enduring examination

and hopefully

an epiphany or two.

As we age, those images of our past tend to come back. They often can make us wish that we're back at those uncertain times when fear kept us from doing some things and youthful ignorance allowed us to do others and learn.

It's good to see that you can write so deeply about your reflections that occur to you.

I am amazed at the new ideas and stories that pop into my dreams as I sleep each night, with very few returning to my youth.

A thought and evocative poem suggestive of the power of discovery and perception Love the symbolic image of the window suggestive of the fragile interface that separates different worlds yet serves as a medium for reflection so typical of your poems. Your final lines sum it up nicely.
