Pretending calm I sat there Looking at your empty chair "Bless the hands," I said "With whom I share my bed, "And bring him safely back to me." Struggling for sense Working I did commence "Bless the man," I prayed "Who from me never swayed "And bring him safely back to me." Caught in the grip of fear To Him I did turn my ear And then, and only then Did I know the surgeon Would bring him safely back to me.

I sense an experience survived in this piece. It's scary to have someone you love go under the surgeon's knife. My father left a decade before my mother and she never stopped missing him. I wrote a poem about that and posted it at AuthorsDen.
