The distinction between past, present, and future
is only an illusion. --Albert Einstein

Time Well Spent
Time is a medium into which we all flow
With no destination it has no place to go.
It fills up our days and observes all we do
With impartial clarity as we wind our way thru.
In silence it sums or subtracts here and there
Like an incessant machine with never a care.
It holds all our challenges our promises too
As we choose or confront from our point of view.
It introduces the good along with the bad
Without a hint of the glad from the mad.
And when we stumble and fall it lends not a hand
It merely records how long it took us to stand.
Time curves and slows down as we move along faster
Like changing the pixels on a television raster.
Did it start with a bang; will it end with a rip?
Will it give us a rush or cause us to drip?
Two dates in our lives record beginning and end
And once it is finished we cannot amend
Our deeds are recorded on the soft sands of time
Still there’s no way to change wrong acts to sublime.
But if Einstein was right and the future is now
We can right many wrongs we’d as soon disavow
And create a new portrait before time runs its course
And show much improvement from finish to source.
I can't wax as poetic as Roger, but I certainly admire the economist who ventures off into physics. You have done justice to this slippery concept, time. And you have inspired me to tackle the subject in a poem someday myself.
As others have noted, and I believe you have too, as I age, time seems to move more swiftly. But I still find waiting to be excruciatingly slow. But I know that you and I will not be sitting, “counting flowers on the wall [paper],” any time soon because we will be busy writing and creating wonderful poetry like this.

I hope you don't mind, but your poem's an inspiration, and I cannot help but be infected by its righteous rhythms and rollicking rhymes! You've got a wonderful style, and I could read you for a mile; here's my response in verse, I've varied the rhyme scheme, but it's a rejoinder. Like I say, I hope you don't moind 'er.
But is there a rhythm and rhyme, too, to Time?
Will seconds lay waste to all who come first?
Or is she in truth just a circus-act mime,
going through the same motions as if she were cursed?
She makes not a sound as hours go around
like some roulette wheel just out for a spin,
often mistaking figure for ground
in her zeal once again, once again to begin.
But you've put a spin on her motions and ways
that quite separates boys from men.
And if Time always wins in all of her plays,
'Now' will, as you suggest, soon be 'Then',
just as boys will be boys, and men will be men!
Thanks for the inspiration, Edward. Always a pleasure reading your poems.
When two men hit the reset button and decide to go out looking for the good in the world, they not only find it but also a lot more.
P.S. The title is listed on Amazon under Look for Something Good by Robert Drews (not by Robert H. Drews)
These song lyrics and art are tales, tides and twinkling lights - tunes telling stories of warmth and sun, city and sand, paths that lead, and the coins we can keep in the Karma Bank. Spirit's been bypassed for sorrow, dreaming of a better tomorrow .
