The Law

I acknowledge its need
But do not bow before its presumed supremacy.
I respect its ends
But I do not respect all its means.
It brings about order
But so do tyrants.
It settles scores
And so do guns.
It imprisons violators
So did the church—once.
It enlightens humans
Not as well as education.
It frees us to do good
Not nearly as well as a free mind.
It is our highest calling
Along with umpires and referees.
It plays no favorites
In the hands of lawyers?
It is blind
When it needs to see.
It makes us civil
Not as well as art, music, and jobs.
It forces us to behave
So does a prison cell.
It is always there
So is my mother-in-law.
It employs many
Too many.
It seeks justice
Without a compass.
It honors equality
Where?
It allows the pursuit of happiness
Not for at least 50 percent.
It welcomes immigrants
And then stops and expels them.
It is made by man
Aha! the biggest flaw of all.
