The Kiss
My favorite moment in time
The one that sets the stage for the day
Is that groggy interlude
Between a prelude and consciousness
When clouds part
And mist slowly dissipates
When warmth takes hold
And awareness creeps in
And I rediscover the most
Magnificent sight of all
When I find that you are there
Alive and well
And in the perfect position—
Next to me.
No sight or sound
No thought or reason
No task and no outcome
Can match the urgency of
Of my gratitude
When I get to savor
The contours of your lips
The softness of your breath
The flutter of your eyelids
And the spark that ignites
The fire within
That is my life.
You turn so slowly toward me
And the distance between us
Narrows to inches;
A smile begins to form
In quivering awakenings
Trumpeting what is to come.
Nothing can stop us now
The inches shrink to millimeters
The softness that was
Becomes overpowering excitement
Intensity erupts into glory
And glory rushes into ecstasy
As morning bursts forth
Like a volcano spewing its contents
In celebration of
Two hearts joined
As we become one
At the touch of
Our lips.
