Grief

The opposite of love is not hate

nor any word other than

indifference.

When I lost my mom

I also lost my freedom

and then I lost

Everything that was important to me

What was I to do?

I couldn’t cry

I didn’t know how

I only knew why--

Nobody cared.

And that word festered

in my head, and my heart

and my soul.

It consumed me.

It was too sophisticated a word

for me to use.

But I felt it.

It stayed with me for most

of my life.

As I write this

I grieve for someone

who is dying.

He has a lot of courage

because he has given only love.

I offered him my place so that

he might rest.

He did not want it.

He did not need it.

Still he showed his respect and

his love.

He quietly found a spot

that suited his needs.

And there he rests

As brave as any warrior

Who knows his fate

He accepts his

without a whimper.

The loss is mine not his

He is true to his character

his needs, his purpose.

He lived a life of honor

By being always true to himself.

And now he is showing me there

is honor in dying

without fanfare accolades or

fancy words.

When I think of him

only one word describes

his life,

and that is love.

They say in Heaven there

is a place reserved for

those who lived worthy lives

with honor distinction and

without complaining.

So far only our pets live there.

You have me crying again. I have lost several elderly cats and each one taught a lesson of living and dying with dignity. Such an outstanding write that touched me so deeply. My sympathy at the loss of your friend.

dying can be such a solitary business, but it is the ones that extend their heart and hands at the a very moment that facilitate the process. I can feel your tender words, Edward. Hard letting go of those who mean so much.

This expressive piece unveils a lot of authenticity. The revealing of connection through your writing “Grief” shows vulnerability and rich humanity. It also contains respect for life and death, people, animals, self, other. Lots of tenderness in your words. I found “He did not want it./He did not need it.” jarringly powerful. ~~ djl

You say a lot about yourself and this friend in this poem about pending death that everyone has at some point in their lives. like when my little warrior Jazz was wounded and bleeding to death with the power out at my house and I could do nothing from my wheelchair to help him. Writing about his death helped me get over my grief.

Outstanding. So much originality and incisive expression of immutable and uplifting thoughts.

A most heartfelt poem Ed…
I empathise strongly with your expressive
and eloquent words…
Our last mischievous cat Jesamine was knocked
down and died, at only three years old…
Over twenty years ago now, and I still miss her…
If you want to know the meaning of unconditional
Love…look no further…
A beautiful tribute…
Sending love…

It's never easy whenever our pets die. We all grieve in a different manner. Some of us do grieve for a long time.

My Big Boy Pride died when he was only 14 years old. He was suffering and the pet advised us that he should be put down. I still miss him. I still keep his urn with his ash here in the house with us. There is also a piece of clay with his paw moulded into it. He slept with me after my husband passing and he was like a son to me. I still grieve for him whenever I think about him.

An eloquent tribute to the feline community. I once had a cat that I got at 4 weeks old while living in Kuwait back in the 70s. I eventually brought her back to the US where she lived a total of 24 years. ! !

A compassionate piece of wordsmithing that resonates with all of us pet lovers, and even those who don't. Given the keyword of "love" is endemic to all sentient beings, even, as you suggest, humans are capable of such feelings, but of late, have been allowing several other layers of passion to dominate their twisted conviction of leadership and power. I wish it were confined to politics, but the lack of love has seeped into the simple fabric of home life and everyday behavior. Having lived in a complex recently where the landlord chose to kill the stray cat that was our friend and a rich source of love for us. Thank you for sharing this. I hope it touches many to think twice next time they are tempted to obviate love for hate.

Ed, you have my deepest sympathy. There is no greater love than that for a beloved pet. At a time like this, words fail us and only the understanding of your loss helps me to sympathize with your sorrow. Sending love and lots of hugs,

Ingeborg
