A Tired Old Veteran Speaks

America, America I thank you for the ride
I write with solemn gratitude, you were always by my side.
You offered me a chance to serve when others walked away
And now I thank my lucky stars that’s what I have to say.
As anyone can plainly see I put my trust in freedom
That was good enough for our forebears
And it’s plenty good for me.

You changed my life without much strife
Now on the younger side of old
I ask for one last favor
Don’t need a waiver
Or so I have been told.

Let it be said after I’m dead
There’s not much room for squiggling
Mark my grave
As one who gave
Just make certain I’ve stopped wiggling.

Stamp on my coffin “Paid in Full:
No exchanges, no returns.”
There’s little left to say
Long may she live
Long may she give
God bless the USA.

A fine tribute and reflection on those who serve, the sacrifice and the quintessential patriotism. One feels the gratitude for the country that they have served, embracing both duty and identity with a quiet pride. Well stated, especially now.

You had me giggling with that wiggling. But seriously, you're not only served your country well hoping that they wouldn't drop those nukes, but you're way with numbers, if ever paid attention to, could light the way to a brilliant future for the good old USA.

Would hate to see that happen a few years after you croak. It needs to happen ASAP… we're all getting older.

Right now I'm not planning on a coffin and if I start feeling one coming on, I'll take a cough drop and stop it. Cough drops still work, don't they? Maybe, honey, Honey.

What gives the thoughtful thank you so much power is that it is from an honest heart that has weathered the real thing, a man who gives thanks where others remain silent. This "stamp" you coined, "Paid in full." is what heroic gratitude voices when honesty and integrity have had a chance to live a noteworthy and purposeful life. Congrats Ed. So good to read this.
