Inner Self

A Fictional look at the
tragady of addiction.

Inner self, Oh inner self,

please change me for the better,

our wife intends to leave today,

please inner self don't let her,

I'll quit the drink, I'll quit the drugs,

but please don't let her leave me,

I know I've tried and failed before,

but I will this time, believe me,

I have no life without her here,

and inner self you know it,

but curse my heart and curse my pride,

that won't let me show it.

And curse the weakness of my will

that enslaves me to this habit,

and makes me cast her love aside,

so badly must I have it.

The craving builds inside of me,

almost to breaking point,

until I have to have another drink,

a fix or just a joint.

To subdue the raging monster

that is struggling to break free,

to control the Hyde, that lurks inside

the Dr Jekell that is me.

Deep inside, I feel that I

might do something I'll regret,

it surprises me, in honesty,

that I haven't done it yet.

So inner self, Oh inner self,

please let me die or cure me,

before I set my anger free

with nothing to deter me.

Remove from me this endless need

for drugs and alcohol.

allow my wife to see that I

am once more in control.

Don't let the monster I've become

tear her world apart.

lay me in my grave tonight

or let me deserve her heart.

Oh inner self, Oh inner self,

you know I'll never alter,

as determined as I am tonight

at the final step I'll falter,

And just as she believes in me,

I'll break her heart again

and destroy what faith she had in me

until nothing else remains.

No trust, no love, no friendship.

just resentment in her breast,

inner self I could not bare it,

so I beg you, give me death.

The hardest one to ever fight is the inner self indeed but fight it we must and love it we must too for it is either friend or foe and we can only pray to understand it and let it free to grow and hopefully set it on the right path so it hurts few and hopefully helps many especially hope it comes to no harm and harms no one else.I think we are guilty of not listening to one's inner self and that in my opinion is because deep down we are all children who want our own way.You wise poem inspires and enlightens with it's profound meaning. As always perfect poetry sir Ralph.Love to you and yours and happy new year Steve...from Kay

A powerful write, my friend. Praying that is all it is; just a writing and not what you're going through. Be well and may God bless you.
