What would happen if the world stopped turning?
Would we be thrown off into out of space?
What would happen if we were more discerning?
Would the world become a better place?
What would happen if we found a reason
To show compassion to our fellow man?
If suddenly there was a season,
To love each other and to understand?
If every nation on the earth united,
And every conflict came to an end,
The thought of it makes me so excited,
Oh, tell me people, what would happen then?
Would there be food enough for all creation?
Would it eradicate both want and need?
I wonder what would be the culmination,
If this daydream really could succeed?
What would happen if we took our rockets,
And melted them down into something else,
Would there be cash in everybody’s pockets?
Could we help each other with our new found wealth?
What would happen if the world stopped turning,
The way it has been turning for so long?
What would happen if we started learning,
That what we’ve done so far has all been wrong?
If we stood together, shoulder to shoulder,
Not face to face at the point of a gun,
If we really tried, could we start all over,
And rectify all the wrong we’ve done?
If every leader and every person,
Really wanted to and really tried?
And those dissenters that would let it worsen,
Well bring them forward and let them tell us why.
It could be for money, it could be for power,
It could be vindictiveness for all we know.
But those who call for war, hour after hour,
What would happen if we all said “No”?
If every person of every colour,
Each religion, every race and creed,
Stood together, like they were brothers,
Then there’s a real chance that we might succeed.
But what would happen if we do not alter?
And we don’t even try to improve our lot?
Then we keep starvation, we keep the slaughter,
And we deserve exactly, what we’ve got.
As science has provided us, there is a powerful "Territorial Imperative," that brings us to conflict and an internal, "Selfish Gene," that makes us want more than we need. The combination, coming down from prehistory, is always one of violence and war.
Still, in the case of John Lennon's Imagine and your poem here, we can, especially now with the Internet come up with ways to let our compassion overcome our bellicose nature and find a way to peace on earth at last. Arthur C Clarke reminded us that the solar system and beyond provides enough resources for humankind to continue to grow exponentially outward into space.
I tend to agree with Jerry. We live in a screwed up world, but it doesn't hurt to dream. Unless we can eliminate need and greed, things will never change.
Looking at history, we like to slaughter one another, Steve. From Cain and Abel, we like to slaughter one another. Nice poetry, but a dream I cannot see coming true.
Deputy Dave Jenkins investigates the murder of local high school principal, Jerry Egge, but this is a multi-faceted novel that deals with spiritualism, romance, friendship, and children who fall through the cracks.
"Murder isn't usually this
Love ya!
