I killed a man today,
It was not my intention.
He looked the other way,
Not showing due attention,
As he pulled out of his driveway
Just as I came past,
He’d probably made mistakes before,
But this would be his last.
It all happened in slow motion,
The shock, the fear, the pain.
Now etched for all eternity
Deep within my brain.
I killed a man today,
Before I’d left my bed,
And regret it as I may,
It’s replayed inside my head,
Every time I close my eyes,
Every time I sleep,
I see him hit the windshield,
Hear his children scream.
I see him appear before me
Before I can hit my brakes,
Watch his look of terror,
As his windshield disintegrates,
I hear the traffic screeching
To a halt as best they could,
And I wonder was I traveling
Faster than I should?
Because I killed a man today,
And I will again tomorrow,
And no matter what they say,
I’m still the cause of his family’s sorrow,
They say that I was not at fault,
That I was not to blame,
Well that may be so, but all I know,
Is I killed a man today.
I left his children fatherless,
His wife a widow now,
I wish and pray there was a way,
I could change it all somehow,
But I killed a man today,
And I can’t turn back time,
No matter how I pray,
It’s forever in my mind.
That I killed a man today,
I killed a man today.
